With the steady growth in the country’s economy as well as the people’s living standards, the computer has a wide application in all aspects of our lives. However, this phenomenon has triggered a heated discussion as to whether the Internet is a blessing or a curse. There are people on both sides of the argument who have very strong feelings. Those who welcome the Internet hold that it brings us great convenience and efficiency. Firstly, we can send e-mails to our friends in faraway countries just by clicking the mouse while sending a traditional letter is much more time-consuming and troublesome. Secondly, by means of the Internet, we can make friends with people from all parts of the world. It overcomes the geographical barriers and makes the world smaller. Moreover, the Internet accelerates the flow of information and spreads education to all corners of the globe. We can have easy and quick access to the latest information worldwide. Lastly, it enables the disabled to get contact with the wonderful outside world. However, like anything else, the Internet has more than one face. While it is indispensable to mankind, it also brings us serious problems to solve. For one thing, it gives rise to psychological problems. An Internet-addicted person lacks enough social interaction, resulting in inability to distinguish fantasy from reality. Those people tend to be a little isolated, self-centered and even eccentric. For another, it establishes a challenge to the existing legal system. There is a sharp rise in the number of cyber-crimes. More and more cases of financial crimes are committed via the Internet. In addition, it also exerts a negative impact on the youth because of the violent and pornographic items on line. Admittedly, there are merits to both arguments.
