外语教育论文 摘要 本文旨在以通識英文課程「現代英語閱讀」的教學經驗為例，探討多元文化教育的種種可能性。這門課的課程設計，以旅行與文學為 主題，帶領非本科系大學生閱讀、討論英文遊記的經典作品，並對照個人的旅行經驗，以及台灣的觀光規畫。同時將這些作品中所描寫的人文、歷史與自然環境，與 自身所處的文化與社會，作一比較，從中了解多元文化的意義，進而發展出以多元文化為宏觀視野的世界觀。從閱讀這些跨文化作品學習、尊重文化差異，以成為一 名開闊包容的世界公民。在教學過程中，筆者以具有性別意識的文化翻譯者角度出發，扮演一個翻譯者的角色，而非傳統威權式的知識權威，筆者希望無論是「內 容」或「形式」上，都能秉持多元文化教育精神，經由深入淺出的方式，培養學生成為「知情意調和發達的綜合體」。 關鍵詞：大學通識教育、多元文化、世界公民、翻譯 Abstract: This article aims to investigate how multiculturalism can help students broaden their horizons and at the same time make them more sensitive to cultural difference in a global world. By reading various authors’ travel writing, the instructor introduces students to basic English reading, writing skills in this class as part of English courses in General Education program. Students from different disciplines other than English try to improve their English. Apart from language skills, this course also attempts to enhance students’ cultural knowledge. It is designed to lead them to understand how the East and the West interact through centuries, how gender, religions, race and ethnicity, class, and globalization shape and constitute our identities, experiences and views of others. It is argued that in this rapidly changing society, we instructors need to help students to prepare for the challenges and stimulus resulting from the flows of information, cultures, and people. We not only need to understand other cultures but also the significance of our own culture. By introducing diverse articles, which are also more relevant to everybody’s daily life, the instructor wants to emphasize that language and cultural knowledge can be acquired by such a course design and induce students’ active participation and better learning results. Such pedagogy also demands the instructor to be a (cultural) translator, striding two or more cultures, to conduct a more democratic way of teaching both in terms of form and content.
