* * * Many journals have a strict word limit – your paper must be no more than 3000 words or 4000 words. If you have used a particular method in your research, you do not need to use 1000 of these words to describe the method. You can give the citation and if the reader is interested, he or she can go and look at the method in the other paper. Maybe you are writing a paper which brings together lots of data from different researchers – you need to cite where all the data came from. * * In scientific papers, every time you make a statement, unless it is something you are reporting in this paper, or it is so well-known that everybody knows it already, you must support the statement with a citation. Common knowledge = everybody knows this already Laura gave me a good example - Invasive species harm the environment, the economy and human health. This is so well-known now, not necessary to put a citation. Now, here is the problem. Many journal have a limit to the number of references you can include Frontiers 50 – others might be 100 (Look in the Instructions to Authors for this information). BUT – here is the problem - authors always think that the number is not big enough. You want to show that you know the literature, you want to include all the citations that will prove your idea, you want to include all the data papers or methods papers, and suddenly, you have 150 citations!! You think, how did that happen????? So you need to find ways to reduce the numbers of citations 1. No need to cite every single paper - Choose the most important papers – maybe the first report of something, and the two most recent papers – If you are publishing in a Chinese language journal, of course you will cite Chinese language publications BUT this workshop is about publishing in international language journals, so as much as possible, you need to cite English language papers. Readers will expect to see citations to papers they can read – so they need to be in Eng
