Gothic literature became mature as a part of romantic literature. In the first half of 19th century, gothic writings began to win more and more readers. Edgar Allan Poe is an outstanding American poet, short-story writer and critic, makes a great contribution to the development of Gothicism. Most scholars make a special effort to the study of Poe’s gothic novels. The purpose of this thesis is to illustrate the Gothicism in Edgar Allan Poe’s poetry in the aspects of theme, protagonists and artistic conception. Chapter One is mainly to illustrate the definition of Gothicism and Edgar Allan Poe’s life and career. Chapter Two mainly illustrates gothic theme in Poe’s poetry.
