The thesis statement is the sentence that sets out the main idea or the purpose of the essay. As illustrated above, the introductory part is like the upside-down triangle. It begins with some general background information and then narrow down to the main point of the essay, as the upside-down triangle narrows. The length of the introductory paragraph should be in proportion to the whole essay. ★ How to write a good thesis statement? A. A thesis statement must make a point. B.
