Chapter 1 Introduction
It is pointed out by《English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education (2011 Edition)》that phonetics is one of the most important topics in English teaching. Natural and canonical pronunciation and intonation are foundamental for effective oral communication. A good understanding of phonetics is the basis for English learning. As an important component of phonetics learning, solid knowledge contributes a lot to communication in English. The spelling teaching should follow the corresponding relevant level of phonetics knowledge aims in the English curriculum. For example, the secondary standard of spelling in primary school is that students should learn simple spelling rules with which they can spell words. Most students in our country only spend limited hours studying English in class. Therefore, the time used in teaching spelling and phonetic symbols is inadequate. However, the word recognition tests in the EPT of primary school is specially designd to check students’ knowledge of phonetics. Students can master the myth of the combinations of letters and grasp English spelling rules easily if they know the perception between letters or letters’ combinations and pronunciation by directly learning the rules of pronunciation. In this way, students can read the word when seeing it and spell the word when hearing it. Thus, it is particularly important to take advantage of Phonics. Students can read words correctly without sound mark by Phonics teaching. They can have fun in class meanwhile their behavior in word recognition tests is improved. So, it is particularly significant to apply phonics to phonetic teaching in the primary school.
It is practically significant to study the application of Phonics in phonetic teaching of primary school. We should analyze and evaluate the advantages of Phonics for teachers and consider how to use the Phonics so that we can improve our teaching skills and effectiveness.
