It is used to denote people other than family members. “The social appellation systems vary with customs and conventions from country to country, which is very complex and interesting. In this thesis the obvious dissimilarities in social appellation systems between Chinese and English will be listed and simply analyzed. This thesis is composed of three chapters. Chapter one is an introduction describing the usage of social appellations and revealing the importance of learning the differences of social appellation systems between different countries. Chapter Two, as the main body of the thesis, listing the dissimilarities in social appellation systems between English and Chinese, can be divided into five parts showing the differences in five aspects. Chapter Three is the conclusion of the thesis. Key words: social appellations, dissimilarities, customs and conventions Chapter One Introduction Appellation forms are the words that are most used in communications almost in all cultures. People use them to greet others and open a conversation appropriately. The social position, status, role and relation of the interlocutors will be identified by the choice of social appellations.
