This flash is VMware-internal only. What Was Announced? On February 9, Microsoft announced the RTM release of Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. This update to their server operating system includes two new technologies that Microsoft is positioning against VMware: Dynamic Memory and RemoteFX. Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 will be generally available on February 22. Executive Summary Microsoft has been promoting the feature updates contained in the Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 patch release for over a year in an attempt to slow VMware momentum in server and desktop virtualization. That strategy has not worked, with analyst firms like Gartner declaring , “Hyper-V is underperforming .” Now that the highly touted Dynamic Memory and RemoteFX features are here , their shortcomings compared to capabilities already in VMware vSphere and View are apparent. Dynamic Memory: 10 years late, critically flawed, still falls far short of vSphere Dynamic Memory is an awkward and one-dimensional fix to Hyper-V’s inability to over subscribe memory that complicates administration. It introduces performance risks but still doesn’t close the large VM density gap between Hyper -V and vSphere. vSphere employs multiple memo ry management technologies, compared to just one used by Dynamic Memory, to provide the absolute best VM density while preserving performance on heavily loaded hosts.
