We divide our lives into moments of activity and passivity, of active involvement as well as passive enjoyment, of either vigorous participation or impassioned observation. In any endeavour there will always be such moments of engagement and passivity. The word passivity may be misleading. It may imply indifference, detachment, lack of concern or interest. Worst, it may even be taken to mean half-awake or half-asleep, partly there and partly not there. This is not what we mean by passive here. This is the danger when we talk about listening. There is such a thing as active listening and passive listening where the degree of passivity is in direct proportion to one’s grasp of theme or topic or the language in which the latter is being discussed. I would rather speak of a continuum from less passive to more active where the leaner has made a conscious choice to become more active or involved not in the listening but also in the speech process. At the point I wish to draw a parallelism between listening and traveling.
{2} Why do we travel? Why do we go places other than where we grew up and are accustomed to? Some of you come from faraway corners of China. In order to get to Guizhou you endured twenty-, thirty- and even forty- hour train rides. A lot of you have sturdy bodies capable of sitting through these long, interminable train rides. Yet getting here, to another side of China is worth it all. The world changes when you move to a new place. You begin to see things, people and situations in a different way. The first few days and weeks, you look around and grope until you begin to find your bearings. During these early moments of exploration and adventure you are like a child walking wide eyes, full of awe and readily amazed at the new, different and perhaps strange sights, tastes and sounds.
