Who is a manager?
Manager:Someone who coordinates and oversee the works of other people so that organizational goals can be accomplished.
Non-managerial employees
First-line manager
Middle manager
Top manager
Where do managers work?
Organization:A deliberate arrangement of people to accomplish some specific purpose.
Distinct purpose/People/Deliberate structure
What do managers do?
Management:Coordinating and overseeing the work activities of others so that their activities are completed efficiently and effectively.
Efficiency:Getting the most output from the least amount of input.
Effectiveness:Doing those work activities that will help the organization reach its goals.
目标第一位,效率第二位;但两者同样重要。要在保证方向正确的情况下,尽量的提高效率。
Management functions
Planning:Set goals,establish strategies for achieving those goals,and develop plans to integrate and coordinate activities.
Organizing:Arranging and structuring work to accomplish the organization’s goals.
Leading:Working with and through people to accomplish goals.
Controlling:Monitoring,comparing,and correcting.
Managerial roles(Mintzberg)
Interpersonal roles:People and other duties that are ceremonial and symbolic in nature.
Figurehead/Leader/Liaison
Informational roles:Collecting,receiving,and disseminating information.
Monitor/Disseminator/Spokesperson
Dicisional roles:Making decisions or choices.
Entrepreneur/Disturbance handler/Resource allocator/Negotiator
Management skills
Technical skills:The job-specific knowledge and techniques.
Human skills:The ability to work well with other people.
Conceptual skills:Think and to conceptualize about abstract and complex situations.
The universality of management:In all these organizations,managers must plan,organize,lead and control.
