P.1- B During this phase of a design project, many different ideas are explored and evaluated before a final conceptual design is chosen. There are many methods to conceptual design which are commonly used by designers. P. 2- A The traditional approach begins with sketching. One of the most stereotypical is napkin sketching. You’re in a restaurant with a client or a colleague talking about the product’s requirements. Someone comes up with an interesting approach and you grab a writing utensil and a fresh napkin and within minutes you have a concept. It won’t be perfect but it will be the seed of the product. P. 2-B After you get back to the office you take your napkin and give it to a designer to clean up. He will make pencil drawings to further clarify the design. Once the image depicts what you intended, it will be refined further. You will need to make multiple sketches exploring different ideas. Each idea will follow a new path. It’s called “ideation” and it’s how we examine ways of doing things. It sounds like it might be a big time waster, but it’s usually well worth the effort. P.3 - A The modern approach is very similar but uses different tools. You might still start with napkin sketches, but instead of going to an artist, you will scan your sketch and import it into design software. In addition to a natural talent for drawing and painting, many of today’s concept designers use 3D computer graphics software to achieve extreme photorealism. P. 3-B Making ideations with a modern 3D computer model gives you the freedom to explore different directions with your designs while keeping to a common initial model. Another really nice advantage of doing things in the modern, computerized way is that you can use your 3D model to generate rapid prototyping models.
