Unit 9 You can learn how to ride the business cycle.;;;Q1.1;Within the WTO framework, we are obliged to open our markets gradually. With more and more imports, our domestic market may get flooded with foreign commodities, and some of our national industries may shrink or even be eliminated. When it comes to exports, We are still faced with obstacles such as foreign countries tariffs, import quotas, and anti-dumping measures from time to time.
However, it seems that most people believe our gains will outweigh our losses. It is obvious to all that Chinese exports have expanded quickly in the past few years. When there is a trade dispute, we can apply for arbitration under the WTO to protect our interests. Although foreign imports exert great pressure on domestic enterprises, competition will stimulate those enterprises to improve their products and services, thus benefiting the people in the long run.
;When China adopted a policy of reform to open up its markets in 1978, the country was economically backward. The most important task was to develop the national economy. Towards that end some Chinese were allowed to seize market opportunities and become rich.
Now, after more than twenty years of rapid economic growth, the disparity between the rich and the poor in China continues to grow. The Gini Coeffcient is alarmingly high, indicating a wide gap between high-income and low-income groups. Our government opposes social inequalities. By taking measures to narrow these differences, we can reduce poor peoples resentment and contribute to the building of a harmonious society. Also, a more just society with only a small gap between the rich and poor will ensure a lower crime rate. A better social environment will in turn promote economic development. So, it is now necessary to address the issue of inequality in distribution.
