It is good advice not to express yourself in too colloquial a manner while writing an academic essay. But, at the same time, this does not mean “the-harder-the-better”. If they misunderstand this, some students may go to extremes: they use words that are so obsolete, so obscure, so unusual that even native speakers have difficulty in understanding the meaning. Be aware that writing is not intended to find out how many words you have put into your head. But, it is designed to assess your sophistication and capability — as well as your flexibility in expressing your ideas in English. What is essential is that you write accurately, fluently, coherently and creatively. Remember the word “KISS” (keep it simple, stupid). Simple words can also have great meaning and “Brevity is the soul of wit”, to quote Shakespeare. The following sentences were written with simple words, but their meaning is not simple at all. “Ours is but, to do or die not to ask why.” — Bernard Shaw “To be or not to be, that is the question.” — Shakespeare “We shall neither give in nor give up.” — Franklin Roosevelt, at the time of the Pearl Harbour attack “If winter comes, can spring be far behind?” — P.B. Shelly I could list more, but these, I am certain, are enough. Just providing the above sentences is not so meaningful. What really matters, in the case of TELTS writing, is whether we can make them serve our own purpose. Can we? Sure we can! So, let’s give it a go: Yours is but to write/cry/buy/ fight/fly, and not to ask why. To live to eat or to eat to live, that is the question. To work or to study, that is the question.
