Serial communication protocol ADEV2 Transmission with smoke-meter OPA-105 rev. 0.2 This document describes the communication protocol for the ADEV2 serial line, in particular it describes the data exchange between a HOST and the smokemeter OPA-105 ASSEMBLAD; commands related to other instruments are available in different documents. This protocol uses control characters and data in ASCII format. During the data exchange the HOST is a “Master” and the smokemeter is a “Slave”, the HOST sends the request and the smokemeter replies with an answer. For every request there is a specific format that contains a command identification to which will correspond an answer, the smokemeter will send data only in reply to a request. 1. Logic Communication Protocol This data exchange method is based on messages sent by the peripheral unit (UP = the receiver; i.e. the smokemeter) to the central unit (UC = the transmitter) in order to communicate line errors or buffer overflow. It is applicable to bidirectional serial connections and it consists of data packages sent by the UC to the UP as strings in between Start and End characters (STX / ETX). Usually when the UP receives each string of data must let know to the UC if such string has been correctly received or not sending to the UC (once ETX has been detected) an acknowledge or not acknowledge signal (ACK/NAK). In our case, in order to speed up the communication and in consideration of the fact that a request is always required, the control character ACK is replaced by the answer itself.
