JournalofEnvironmentalScienceandEngineeringB2(2013)248-255 FormerlypartofJournalofEnvironmentalScienceandEngineering，ISSN 1934—8932 a LI搴 H lN 石 MercuryExposureAssessmentinIraqiWomen’sHair withRespecttoFishConsumptionandContaminationin Marshland(SouthernIraq) ReyamNajiAjmi DepartmentofEnvironmentalScience，AL—MustansaryahUniversity,Baghdad496,Iraq Received：March07，2012／Accepted：Aprilol2013／Published：April20．2013 Abstract：Thisstudy investigatedthelevelofmercury inhairsamplesofpregnantwomenandnewbornslivinginmarshes ． Hair mercury concentration，asanindicatorofmercury body1oad．wasstudiedin30 samplesofindigenouswomen andnewbornsto assessthe associationbetweenfish consumption andspecificcharacteristicsthatcan influence exposure ． InJanuary 2013．40 pregnantwomenwereinvitedtoparticipate．An interview wasadministeredand aquestionnairewasusedtocollectinofmr ation aboutage，bodyweight，height，fish(flesh)consumption，pregnancystage，residenceduration，educationlevel，familyincomeand numberofdentalamalgam fillings．TheresultsshowedthatforhairtotalHgconcentrationwas6 ． 47~tg／gf6．47±0．71Pg／g)．About 5．9％ ofmothershadhairtotalHglevelsinexcessof14lag／g．Maternalhairmercury wasabovethethresholdlevelofWHO rWorld HealthOrganization)(5gg／g)．Asexpected，therewasaclearincreaseinhairHgwithreportedfleshfishconsumption(=O．08)． Thehighestmean inagroupwhoconsumedfish severaltimesperweekwas5．93lag／g ． Moreover．asignificanteffectofageand residentialtimeonHginwomen’shairwasfoundsuchastheolderwomen． Keywords：M ercury
