14 14 3 The first component in any insulation system is the wire itself. The magnet wire is typically coated, and the material, thickness and concentricity of that coating can all affect the quality of the insulation system. The motor’s slot insulation physically separates the motor’s components. Slot liners and top sticks increase phase to ground insulation and the mid sticks increase phase to phase insulation. All add to the dielectric strength of the insulation system. After the winding is assembled, it is coated/impregnated with an insulating resin. This resin should fill in as much space as possible between the the wires and stator slots to create a solid unit. This will add to the dielectric capability of the insulation system. 15 15 4 At the coil head, (that part of the winding that is outside of the slot) additional insulation is added to strengthen the performance of RPM AC motors. Phase paper is placed between windings of different phases, insulation is added to the leads that emerge from those windings and the entire assembly is taped and laced to increase its strength and prevent component movement. This greatly increases the dielectric value of the insulation from phase to phase as well as from coil group to coil group. In addition, the type of resin used can range from solvent borne to a 100% reactive type. Using the solvent borne resin requires that the solvents are removed during the curing (Bake) process leaving the final insulation material. For the 100% reactive resins, the solution material becomes part of the final insulation material.
