Spiridon Louis, a Greek postal worker crossed the finish line a full seven minutes ahead of the pack. He used 2 hours, 58 minutes, and 50 seconds for the 40 kilometer distance (average pace of 7:11 minutes per mile). When it was all over, nine runners finished the run, and 8 of them Greeks.
