SHEAR STRENGTH PARAMETERS OF FRESH MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE

Abstract To investigate the shear strength of wastesa large-scale test apparatus combining compression and
direct shear was used to conduct 288 experiments for fresh municipal solid wastes. Three mixture proportions of
the samples were adopted and three initial void ratios were selected for each mixture proportion. Besidesfour
different vertical pressures were chosen for every initial void ratioeight different time lengths of compression for
each vertical pressure were selectedand ten different limiting values of shear strain for each sample were
considered. The cohesion force and the internal friction angle were found to increase with the increase of the
limiting values of shear strain and a simple logarithmic model was used to describe the relationship. The
coefficients of the logarithmic model were discussed. The relationship between the coefficients of the model and
the compression time were formulatedand the range of the fitted coefficients values was also given.
