The Historical and Cultural city blocks are not only the carrier of urban history and heritage of the culture, but also entity that brings economic benefits to urban and promotes regional culture, which endows cities with unique identification. The importance of protection and renewal of historical and cultural city blocks in todays society, around the world, have been raised to a high level. The historical and cultural city blocks are valuable because they are non-renewable. As a result, the protection and regeneration of historical and cultural city blocks are important and urgent.
The first part of the paper focuses on analyzing the concept of protection of historical and cultural city blocks. The paper then moves on to introduce the development of historical and cultural city blocks protection theory in Eastern and Western countries. For instance, after researching the Conservation and Renewal of Wen Shuyuan Historic District located in Chengdu, the article will compare it with Lille, which shares many similarities, such as urban culture, urban construction and development, with Chengdu. The next part of the paper will analyze the old Lille History Block protection and updating in order to discover existing problems in Chengdu. Finally, after reviewing and summarizing, this essay intends to find out a way of historical and cultural city blocks protection in Chengdu, including giving advices to the existing historical and cultural blocks protection and renewal. Also, the paper would like to enlarge the scope of the citys historical and cultural blocks. Finally, the paper will discuss this topic from a human, material, non-material perspective, that is, people - designers, management, the general public; material - historical buildings, urban space; and non-material - tradition, culture. The three aspects will lead the readers to explore the appropriate
