The reform stressed in the new curriculum demands that education in schools
should meet the needs of all students, that is, “attention should be paid to the
development of each student.” The new curriculum advocates autonomy, cooperation,
and exploration in the ways of learning. It also pays attention to students? interest in
learning and experience, wants students to form the active learning attitude, and thus
build a solid foundation for the students? lifelong learning. To implement the new
curriculum reform, we must adopt the concept of teaching advocated in the new
curriculum and give up the traditional practice in English classroom teaching which
emphasizes the teachers authority and neglects the students subjectivity
The education reform also calls for an urgent need for teachers to learn and absorb
the advanced teaching theories, strategies and skills, and actively carry out effective
classroom incentive strategies in order to adapt to the needs of teaching reform. This
paper, with the method of literature research, first elaborates the definition and the
characteristic related to incentive strategies and presents a detailed analysis of the
theoretical basis of incentive strategies and the incentive theories in foreign language
teaching such as Maslow?s hierarchy of needs theory, V. H. Vroom?s expectancy theory
of motivation, Mcclelland?s theory of achievement, Skinner?s reinforcement theory,
Krashen?s affective filter theory, Bruner?s learning motivation system and Dornyei?s
three-leveled learning theory Based on the related research findings, the paper then
investigates the current situation of English teaching and learning of junior high schools
by sending out questionnaires to learn about the various problems English teaching in
junior high schools. Finally, by using the case study method, the paper puts forward six
motivation strategies in English teaching, which can be put into practice throughout the
entire tea
