.. USE SHORTER VERSION? Mindfulness and Conflict Resolution Herbert H. Blumberg Goldsmiths College, University of London email: h.blumberg@gold.ac.uk Conflict Complexity II (Conflict Research Society and Conflict Analysis Research Centre), Sept. 2009, University of \Kent, Canterbury Both complexity and simplicty represent contributions of MINDFULNESS research to peace psychology - and to conflict resolution generally. Complexity is implicit in implicit in active cognitive processing and awareness of full context. But there is also a simplicity in focusing on the preswent time and place. This paper reviews three aspects of mindfulness as applicable to peace psychology and conflict resolution. Quick Preview 1. A tradition of research developed most notably by Ellen Langer demonstrates both task and social advantages from specific and general training in mindfulness. 2. In the second strand: Thich Nhat Hanh (English pronunciation is: Tik · Nyat · Hawn) has explained the value of combining nonviolent social action with personal meditative awareness of the present moment, even (or pehaps espeically) in extraordinarily trying circumstances. 3. Mindfulness training, however, stresses the value of thinking of at least three examples or aspects of phenomena. So it seems an arguably good idea that I invent a plausible third category for the present paper! ? This is to review more explicitly how mindfulness research might be applied to different areas of peace psychology conflict resolution. I was surprised pleased to learn of the panel discussion scheduled to follow this paper. So in the review of mindfulness applicability I also include a “potted summary” of the growth content of peace psychology. Langer’s research on mindfulness goes back to the 1970s. And Nhat Hahn’s to the 1960s. But (mainly) PsycINFO’s relevant references to MINDFULNESS (most of which are listed in appendix to this ppt file) have blossomed in the present century
