Contrasting John Donne’s Song and E.E. Cummings’ Next to of Course God America
Contrasting John Donne?s Song and E.E. Cummings? Next to of Course God America
Abstract: John Donne?s Song satirizing the faithlessness and frivolity of women and E.E. Cummings? Next to of Course God America ridiculing the blind death without thinking in war both achieve fantastic irony. Although Song is a lyric poem, it has strong satire effect through its creative use of conversation and conceit which combine passion and argument harmoniously. E.E. Cummings?Next to of Course God America gives an impression of striking visual shock by extremely unusual syntactic form and special image. It is interesting and worthwhile to contrast the two poems.
Key Words: Poem;Syntactic form;Creative;Adoption of images

E.E. Cummings’Next to of Course God America and John Donne?s Song both attain strong effect of irony through different way. The former is featured by irregular form and special image such as unconventional syntax and adoption of images from the lyrics. The latter is characterized by innovative conversation and conceit such as creative employment of conversation in poem and use of conceit. By contraction, a conclusion can be drawn that Donne has an advantage over Cummings because of combination of passion and persuasion

Quotation marks define a speaker, who is not to be taken as the poet. All the first letters are placed as small ones within the quotation mark. Supposing punctuating the first and second lines like Next to, of course, god, america i love you, land of the pilgrims?, and so forth, oh. , they may be more readily comprehended.
The word order of this poem is weird. Cummings arranges arbitrarily. “deafanddumb” in the line of six is a strange com
