Part I The Literature of Colonial America 1. Historical Introduction At the beginning of the 17th century, the vast continental area that was to become the United States had been probed only slightly by English European explorers. The first writings that we call American were the narratives(叙事性记录) journals(日志 of these settlements. It stirred the imagination to great heights. All seemed possible through hard work faith. Puritans saw themselves as new saints with a spiritual mission to flee the Old World create a New Israel, a New Promised L, in the America that John Smith had described. The Earliest settlers of America 2. The First American Writer Captain John Smith was the first American writer. In 1608 part of his letter was published under the title, A True Relation of Such Occurrences Accidents of Note as Hath Happened in Virginia Since the First Planting of That Colony.《殖民地第一次在弗吉尼亚开拓以来发生的各种事件的真实介绍》。 His next book was A Map of Virginia: with a Description of the Country《弗吉尼亚地图:一个乡村的描述》. Captain John Smith Captain Smith may not have been a modest man, but it is clear that he contributed more to the survival of the Jamestown colony than anyone else did. He tirelessly explored the rivers bays around the Chesapeake(切萨皮克)region. He saw from the beginning what was eventually to be a basic principle of American history, the need of “workers” instead of “gentlemen” for the tough job of planting colonies pushing the frontiers westward. 3. Early New England Literature New England had formed the beginning a literature of ideas: theological, moral, historical, political. The Puritans in New England embraced hardships, together whit the discipline of a harsh church. The church thus became the supreme political body. They grappled strongly with challenges they set themselves.
