Multimodule System for Wastewater Treatment by Photocatalysis ·1 · Multimodule System for Wastewater Treatment by Photocatalysis Sorrell Charles Christopher, Koshy Pramod, Gupta Sushil (School of Materials Science and Engineering, UNSW Australia, Sydney, NSW 2052, Australia) Abstract The present work presents the basic elements of materials and design for a modular reactor system for the removal of heavy metals, organic materials, and pathogens from wastewater. The primary module employs photocatalytic TiO2 in packed helical tube form for the removal of organic materials and pathogens, which are decomposed to carbon dioxide and water. The secondary module employs similar materials but in packed bed form for the reduction of dissolved metal ions to the metallic state, which are removed from the photocatalysts by the reverse process. Additional tailored modules for alternative processes, such as sieving, filtration, ion exchange, and adsorption, can be added in series as required for the removal of site-specific water contaminants that require different or modified approaches. Both of the core modules are based on the UV irradiation of ceramic or polymeric beads decorated with TiO2 particles. The present work summarises the critical design parameters for the modules and the overall benefits of the use of this technology for wastewater treatment in natural, domestic, and industrial settings, the latter of which include coal washing, tailings ponds, and cooling water reservoirs. The system is designed to be applicable in
