Thamrin No.10, Menteng, Kota Jakarta Pusat, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 10350, Indonesia Local Architect:Atelier 6 International Area:5600.0 sqm Project Year:2014 The new French diplomatic campus brings together Chancellery, Economic, Military and Cultural departments, and French Institute, to allow a greater cohesion within the French services in Indonesia. Between many skyscrapers and a major Highway, the building is affirming itself with emergences of two clearly recognizable volumes. In this highly disparate urban context, the project is unique thanks to a particular and homogeneous facade materiality. The aim is a simple, clear readable architecture. A two- level pedestal fills all the buildable area. It hosts spaces for public functions: Embassy controlled zone and Institute common services, including auditorium, classrooms, a library and a café. The pedestal is covered with volcanic stones, expressing a sense of mass. Placed on the pedestal, two volumes rise: the Chancellery volume and the Institute volume, including offices area, and spaces not open to public. Through its materiality, there is a contrast between the darkness of volcanic stones, and clearness of the two volumes. To be responsive from the safety and accessibility point of view, the Chancellery volume is protected with a lacquered and perforated aluminum sheet, providing shadow, confidentiality and security.
