1. Analysis of the teaching contents:
This is the first teaching period of this unit. The central part of this period is the reading passage with the name of The Million Pound Bank Note, showing the students the scene of this drama.
Warming up gives a simple introduction of an American writer — Mark Twain, the author of this play, aiming at that the students have a good knowledge for Mark Twain and his writings.
Pre?reading provides two questions to help the students focus on the topic of the reading passage and lead the students to think about some things of money and outlook on life.
Reading gives the students the Act Ⅰ, Scene 3. This scene tells us the beginning of this play, two old and wealthy brothers make a bet. They bet that what will he does if a poor man get a million pound bank note. They saw a penniless young man — Henry Adams, an American businessman,who is lost in London and does not know what he should do — wandering on the pavement outside their house. They think Adams is suitable for their bet, so they decided give the one million pound bank note to him.
Comprehending consists of six part of exercises for the students to do so as to help them to get a better understanding of the text, that is to say, to help the teacher to check how much the students have understood the text.
2. Teaching aims:
(1) To know the meaning of the following new words and phrases appearing in this passage: adventure, scene, wander, permit, spot, patience, go ahead, by accident, stare at, account for, on the contrary.
(2) To know the style of drama, and understand the language of drama.
(3) To develop the students? reading ability by skimming and scanning the passage.
(4) To develop the students?蒺speaking ability by showing the play.
(5) To know the life of Mark Twain and his writing pattern, and set up a right outlook on life.
