It is important for EFL（English as a Foreign Language）students to develop a large vocabulary. However, many students find it really hard to remember new words, which become the main obstacle to further improvement of their English. On the other hand, English teachers, especially college teachers, tend to neglect the teaching of vocabulary, thus making it more difficult for students to engage in efficient learning of English words. Therefore, it is of great significance for teachers to teach the students some vocabulary acquisition skills to enable them to develop a deeper understanding of the words, which will help them learn these words by heart with ease.【Key words】Vocabulary Acquisition skills Word building I Introduction The studying of words is the most fundamental part of language learning and also the preconditions of language application. It could be argued that “the initial stages of language learning should be devoted almost entirely to vocabulary work”（David Nunan, 1991）. An English learnerrsquo;s communicative competence depends on many aspects, but a good command of basic vocabulary is very important in college English learning. It has been proved that the students inadequate store of vocabulary and misuse of words has greatly affected the improvement of their English level. One of the famous linguists, Rivers（1983: 125）has also argued that the acquisition of an adequate vocabulary is essential for successful second language use because without an extensive vocabulary, we will be unable to use the structures and functions we may have learn
