Media Bias in the United States Christian Hammerdorfer JMC 141 Professor Robert Fortner April 19, 2012 Media Bias in the United States Since the establishment of mainstream media and professional journalism in the United States, there has been the seemingly endless argument over whether or not there the media is biased, and if so, in what ways and in which direction. Allegations have been made of the media of a liberal bias, a conservative bias, a mainstream bias, a corporate bias, and even a centrist bias. The United States today is home to a number of watchdog organizations, from all ends of the political spectrum, which monitor and guard against this bias. These organizations include Media Research Center (MRC), a self described conservative organization, Accuracy in Media (AIM), which asserts itself as politically neutral, but is generally considered to be a conservative organization, and the more liberal and progressive Fairness Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) and Media Matters for America. While the opinion of the American media varies depending on the source, it seems safe to say that while the majority of media outlets tend to be more liberal leaning, those that have a more conservative bias tend to be more heavily skewed. Certainly the most common allegations of media bias in the United States are those of a liberal bias, and since 1987, the Media Research Center has been, in their own words, “holding the liberal media accountable for shamelessly advancing a left-wing agenda, distorting the truth, and vilifying the conservative movement.” While the Media Research Center by no means tries to claim political neutrality, the organization is one of the most cited sources for information regarding US media bias today. On the other end of the spectrum lies MMFA, the liberal leaning counterpart to the Media Research Center. According to the organization’s website, MMFA is dedicated to “comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinform
