Zoe Jane Echo Tiffany Darlene Buying a book does not mean that you really own the book, just as a person cannot be your friend until you have become well-acquainted with him. If you don’t open your heart to your friend, neither will he to you. The same is true of books—there are some conditions to be fulfilled if the most efficient kind of reading is to be done. Only when your reading has been efficient can the book be truly yours. You must give full attention to the reading of the book. Otherwise, it is just like merely looking at dishes of food. You do not own the food in the most important sense until you consume it and get it into your bloodstream. Books must be absorbed by yourself to do you any good. Active thinking is necessary while you are reading. If reading is to accomplish anything more than passing time, it must be active. Active reading is thinking, and thinking tends to express itself in words, spoken or written. To insure your grasp of gist of a book, note-taking, the physical act of writing, is the most effective means, just as writing between the lines. Writing, with your own hand, brings words and sentences more sharply before your mind and preserves them better in your memory. If the book is yours, you can make full use of the margins to put down your comments on, reactions to and thoughts about what the writer has written. You can pick up the book the following week or year, and there are all your points of agreement, disagreement, doubt, and inquiry. It goes without saying that you will not always agree with the writer. The ideas the writer conveys to you will not and should not be accepted unconditionally. If your mental activities are operating fully, the notes in the margins may consist of both agreement and disagreement. Furthermore, as your knowledge accumulates, your reactions to the same ideas may differ at different times. Thus reading back on your former notes is just like reviewing your own mental growth.
