Understanding the opinions expressed in these essays may spark interesting ideas for your own essay 2. Discovering the various ways other writers have organized and explained their material should give you some new ideas about selecting your own strategies and supporting evidence 3.Familializing yourself with the effective stylistic devices and diction of other writers may also encourage you to use the language in ways you’ve never tried before. How to become an analytical reader? Understand the writer’s ideas Consider how these ideas were presented Why the writer presented them that way Whether that presentation was effective Steps to reading well 1. Before you begin the essay itself, note the publication information and biographical data on the author in the paragraph that precedes each selection in this text. 2. Note the title of the essay. 3. First reading of the essay. Check the dictionary if there are words you don’t know appear in key places in the essay. 4. After the first reading, write a sentence or two summarizing your general impression of the essay’s content or ideas while considering these questions: What do you think the writer was trying to do? Overall, how well did he or she succeed? 5. Start another, closer reading and answer the following questions by making some notes Steps to reading well 6. Look at the title (again) and at the essay’s introductory paragraphs. Did they effectively set up your expectations? Introduce the topic, main idea, tone? 7. Locate the writer’s main point or thesis. If the thesis is implied, mark places that you think most clearly indicate the writer’s stance. 8. Mark the important statements (topic sentence) that support or illustrate the thesis, and try numbering them 10.
