PRELIMINARY DEMOGRAPHICASPECTSON THE IXh-Xh CENTURY POPULATION FROM THE INTRA-CARPATHIAN SPACE (THE ALBA IULIA NECROPOLE) GEORGETA MlU, DAN BOTEZATU and VASIL|CA-MONICA GROZA The authors develop a demographicstudy on an osteologicalseties fomed of 342 skeletons, digged out fr-om the IXn Xrh century necropole of Alba Iulia. Sex and age distribution of the permits skeletons the following observations: a high mortality ofsubjects under 20 years ofage and a very low one in thoseolder than 60; the subjectshaving exceeded the adult age (20-x years) represent slightly more than half of the population (about 61%), most of rhem having died du ng maturity; if considering the sex criterion, a higher mortality was recorded in men, comparatively with women (about 37% velrs?.rronly about 21%), with the exception of the adult age,whcn a higher number of deceasesis registeredin women (about l4vo versusabout 60l.); the avemge life tirne for the whole population is quite low (around24 years),which resultsfrom the high mortality ofchildren: on sexes, for the subjectshaving exceededthe age of 20, the averagelife time is about g years longer in nren, velsrr women (42 years comparativelywith 34).
