My Reflections on Constructing a Highly Effective Classroom Teaching
In traditional teaching, teachers only focus their attention on the development of the students’ knowledge but pay little or no attention to the interests, emotions and feelings of the students. Unfortunately, I have to admit that I was one of these teachers when I started working. Here, however, I want to share with you one of my lessons, which I think might not be that traditional. Here are some noticeable highlights that may illustrate what an effective teaching mode is like in my mind.
The teaching material is about the life story of Helen Keller, Lesson 2 of Unit16 from Senior High English Module6 published by Beijing Normal University Press. When writing the teaching plan, I intended not only to develop the students’ language skills all around but also help the students form the positive attitude towards life. Hopefully, they would be able to appreciate the beauty of this passage as much as I did, thus they would definitely achieve more.
Firstly, the lead-in part was designed to be natural and effective. I played a video clip about Helen’s childhood from a film at the beginning of the class to arise the students’ interests in the topic. The reason why the film was chosen, I think, is that students can answer the following questions easily with the help of this video clip. ①Do you know the name of the girl? ②Do you know what was special about her? Then, I naturally moved into the next teaching step of using some adjectives to describe Helen’s behavior in the film, in which some new words were presented and explained. The students were motivated greatly by these entire introduction and they showed great interest in Helen’s life. So they were eager to read the related passage with some questions in mind. Given two minutes, the students were required to predict what the text would talk about so as to choose two best titles from the five choices shown on the screen. Honestly, students’ performanc
