* I grew up in a nucleus level farm in Indiana and from a very young age I took an interest in the pigs, especially in the breeding and farrowing. Over the years I developed a passion for data, collection of it, understanding, and utilizing it to make improvements. I am passionate about helping others and in my current role I provide technical service to clients with a focus on using data to make improvements. * It has been proven many times over that bad data is worse than no data. Making decisions on what you believe to be occurring based off of data that isn’t accurate only leads to making bad decisions which is often worse than no decision. It is critical at all levels of production to stress the importance of data accuracy. When doing data entry, many programs will now block you from entering events that are not biologically possible but it is important then that the staff go back and try to determine where the error occurred, not just discard the data. You are only hurting yourself if you cheat on the numbers. * The PureTek group has been working closely with Swine Management Services to provide services to our clients that bring value to their operations. With over 810 farms representing over 1.4 million sows this is a great opportunity to look at where your farm is compared to the industry. All of the datasets are confidential the examples that I am using today have all had farm names removed from them. * This is the first of 6 pages of the Benchmarking report that we are using within our system. It is a great fit when looking at those parameters that affect profitability and for this talk I am going to focus on the 8 boxes that comprise the SMS production Index.
