Will Traditional Department Stores Become a “Disappearing Industry” Statistics showed that in 2011, the overall transactions of the Chinese e-commerce market had reached ￥7 trillion , an increase of 46.4% compared to 2010. The great success the e-marketing has achieved brings a big challenge to the market share of the traditional department store industry. With an increasing number of people shopping online and the demand remaining almost the same in the short term, the number of customers shopping in the big stores has decreased correspondently. Insiders have noted that in recent years, the items whose sales have declined a lot in department stores are precisely those that can be easily purchased online, such as appliances, IT products, textiles, and even luxury items. Meanwhile, some traditional department stores can’t help but face the embarrassment of having degrading into showrooms for online shoppers. Many a person walks into a physical store merely to look for the right style and size of clothes or other items, and then purchases them online, for which the “number-copying clan” and “the candid” have come into being. As the e-business thrives rapidly, the range of its goods also expands, including clothing, cosmetics, household articles and the like. Shoppers take a fancy to the goods offline and then place orders online. Apart from the market invasion of the online selling, the fact that the competition within the industry itself is intense can not be underestimated. The products in traditional stores are quite similar that a fierce competition in this industry is unavoidable. In recent years, lots of large-scale shopping malls like supercenters have been built up in various cities throughout the country, thus making it rather difficult for stores to stay in business with the existing competitive situation turning into a far less desirable one. Walking down the commercial streets in different cities, one can scarcely find anything special because all the de
