Some families never serve any alcoholic drinks, others have them before dinner, wine with the meal, and perhaps drinks after dinner. You are more likely to be offered a cocktail before dinner than wine with the meal. If you are not accustomed to American cocktails, be careful, they are often quite strong. Women as well as men drink them, but you should feel free to ask for something less strong or a non-alcoholic drink if you wish. In some homes, cocktails may be served for an hour or longer before dinner. If you do not wish to have another cocktail, simply say so. Wine is becoming increasingly popular with Americans but is still not as common as in some other countries and not drunk as much as beer.
