[英语学习]PART III THE LITERATURE OF ROMANTICISM

The Literature of Romanticism The unity of romanticism and realism: In this novel as in his other early novels, Melville is still more enthusiastic about setting out on a quest for the meaning of the universe, hence the novel is more metaphysical and the hero is ardent and self-dramatizing, and defying God; but Moby-Dick is still a mystery, an ultimate mystery of the universe, inscrutable(难以理解的) and ambivalent, and the voyage of the mind will forever remain a search, not a discovery, of the truth; however, the purpose of the fictional tale is to penetrate as deeply as possible into the metaphysical, theological, moral, psychological, and social truths of human experience. The white whale, Moby-Dick, symbolizes nature for Melville, for it is complex, unfathomable, malignant, and beautiful as well. For the character Ahab, the whale represents only evil. The Literature of Romanticism The language features: Different levels of language use and styles turn the whole book into a symphony with all the musical instruments going on to form a melody(悦耳的旋律).
