Course Description Course name: History of British and American Literature for 2009 English Majors Delivery time: Sep. 2011—Jan. 2012 Rationale (Guiding principles) Lay emphasis on basic knowledge about the western English literature, especially American literature and British literature and basic literary theory, by which enrich students’ knowledge about English; Teaching method: communicative (teaching by teacher in class, practicing by students both in class and after class, paper writing and movie-viewing, etc.); Learner training: logical and critical thinking, cooperative learning, self-study capacity, and basic ability to conduct independent research. General Outcomes The students will be able to begin to have some basic ideas about the development of the British literature and American literature; have some ideas about the famous literary schools and their historical and social background, characteristics and influence, etc.; acquaint themselves with the famous writers and the title and the main content of their masterpieces; learn to appreciate the classic works of the representatives of different literary schools; learn to have a better understanding of the literary works with the help of the relevant literary critical articles; know some simple and typical literary theories; explain some of the literary terms; comment on the excerpt of the unfamiliar or totally unknown literary works independently, using their existing knowledge about the western English literature ; Specific Objectives The students will be able to spell out the full names of the acknowledged famous writers in the British and American literature; know the titles of the masterpieces of those acknowledged famous writers; recite at least two sonnets by Shakespeare , knowing the its connotation and related knowledge; recite at least three classic poems by romanticist poems (which may be useful in their independent writings) and explain them accurately; identify the title of some classic w
