Venice,1596. Antonio and Bassanio are friends. When Bassanio asks for 3000 ducats to chase Portia, Antonio says yes. His capital(资金)was tied up in merchant ships at sea, so he must go to Shylock, a Jewish moneylender. Shylock wraps his hatred in kindness, offering a three-month loan at no interest(利息).But if not repaid on time, Antonio will owe a pound of flesh. The Jew’s daughter elopes(私奔) with a Christian, whetting(刺激) Shylock‘s hatred. While Bassanio’s away chasing Portia, Antonio‘s ships foundered(沉没), and Shylock demands his pound of flesh.
