In the middle of 1970s, an experimental teaching project was made in a school in South India. The experimenter was N. S. Prabhu. a linguist worshiping the strong version of the Communicative Approach. It began with a strong interpretation of the Communicative Approach. The students strictly followed the requirements of a communicative syllabus, and the textbook was organized with a series of communicative items. They were graded in the order of difficult points, m the beginning, student, were only required to do very simple items such as labeling, then they did some complex ones like map-making. The teachers task was to help students accomplish learning work. At the early stage, stress was on necessary input for comprehension, when students internal grammar was fully developed, their language competence was strengthened. Gradually, the structural errors or mistakes appearing in the beginning we corrected and their speech became closer to the standardized level. The project was a success. In 1979, the experiment led by Prabhu was carried on at the Regional Institute of English in Bangalore and other three centers in the south of India.
