They have to work with the FDA to make sure the products are safe for consumption. Ask audience if they are familiar with the FDA and why they are important. * Chemical engineers make chemicals (or manipulate already existing chemicals) and then figure out different ways to use them—e.g., in paint, dyes, plastic, pesticides, fertilizers, shampoo, soap…anything you can think of. ChEs discover the new chemical combinations (thereby enhancing products or creating new ones) and then devise systems for their mass production—so the consumer can use them; i.e., take the chemicals/products from the lab to the store. Ask audience for other uses of chemicals. * ChEs in this specialty work in all areas. Regulatory driven—EPA, OSHA, State, local. Design wastewater, air pollution, or solid waste treatment systems to clean up oil spills or chemical accidents or airborne pollutants. Another job for ChEs in this field is to read and interpret the regulatory requirements that apply to the industry/field they are working in. * Poll audience.
