Honourable Lord Taylor of Warwick The China University of Geosciences, Beijing, 14 November 2006 Professor Mo, Professor Lei, Ladies and Gentlemen “Good Day”, “Nimen Hao” : I am delighted and honoured to be with you today. The China University of Geosciences has a world class reputation. You have produced many brilliant geologists . These include the Chinese Premier himself, Premier Wen Jiabao and of course, Professor Mo Xuanxue. This is my first visit to your beautiful country. I am here to attend the China Mining Conference 2006. I have been so impressed by the friendship and hospitality I have received. I am a lawyer by profession and a Member of the Upper House in the British Parliament. My title of Lord is similar to that of Senator in the American government. This slide shows me wearing my Lords robes, when I was given the title by Her Majesty the Queen of England, in 1996. This part of my robes is gold, which is relevant to my speech later! My father was a famous cricketer in England. Cricket is like the American sport of baseball, but cricketers get less money! My father played professional cricket for the Warwickshire Bears and the West Indies national team. I also have the privilege to be Chancellor of Bournemouth University, which has its own Business and Media Centres. There are currently over 300 Chinese students at Bournemouth. The head of the Bournemouth University International and Corporate relations, Lydia Chen, is from Yunnan province. One of our top academics is Professor Jian Zhang.
