As is the case (shown in this figure) in North Carolina, treatments for plant bugs in the Southeast is far lower than in the Mid-south. * This figure illustrates the potential damage caused by stink bugs in Georgia. The cotton in the background was treated 5 times for stink bugs while the cotton in the foreground was not treated. Very little bollworm damage was seen in the BG II cotton variety. * The green (Acrosternum hilare) and brown stink bug (Euschistus servus) by far the most damaging stink bug species to cotton in NC and VA. * As can be seen from this figure, while the green stink bug (Nezara viridula) is uncommon in NC, this species is common in GA cotton fields, with SC showing intermediate levels of the two green species of green stink bugs shown. * Although exceptions exist, stink bugs generally invade cotton fields gradually throughout the bloom period. * Additionally, although high levels of stink bug feeding on very small, dime-sized bolls can occur, this observations is unusual in the Southeast. * This figure shows declining yield as a function of greater stink bug damage. The number “7” refers to a treatment with 7 weekly applications for stink bugs beginning at the first week of bloom. The “6” refers to a second treatment that began one week later and progressed through 6 weekly applications, and so on. As was the case in other tests under very high stink bug levels, the treatments that began during the initial 2 weeks of blooming did not increase yields. * Now lets look at the situation later in the bloom period. Just as a review, remember that scouts are strongly encouraged to always assess internal damage to quarter-sized bolls. Bolls smaller than this size might not be old enough to have accumulated much damage and may be less attractive to stink bugs. Bolls that are larger than this size may have accumulated older damage (with the associated risk that live stink bugs may no longer be present). * Because scouts are assessi
