Club Coaching:What I Wish I’d Known Presented by: Jack Roach, USA Swimming National Youth Team Head Coach September 11, 2009 Introduction Coach the Complete Individual Create a Champion’s Vision Define a Winning Team Culture Coach the Coaches (Education) Coach the Complete Individual Create a balanced experience Mind body Humans hard-wired to hunt, eat, rest Incorporate complementary sports Run, swim, bike Rowing, weightlifting, climbing, backpacking More exposure allows for greater fitness in adulthood Develop “plank” strength Coach the Complete Individual Determine % of dryland is appropriate by age Ian Thorpe: Until age 14 no doubles; 20-30k (cricket and football) proportions of your training (in or out of the water) should the athletes focus on building an aerobic base, intervals work, drills, resistance, pulling, kicking and etc. Read the studies. Coach the Complete Individual Create the “whole body champion” Frequency Intensity Duration Technique Create a Champion’s Vision Based on success and confidence not fear and failure Requires positive feedback from everyone Use the tools: video feedback, video instruction, books, Internet Listen, watch and ask questions of winning - positive coaches Create a Champion’s Vision Educate difference between anticipation and expectation Expectation comes from outside of your control Anticipation comes from within Removes outside pressure and provides energy that excites you Utilize it! Create a Champion’s Vision Develop a warrior approach Racing in parallel but identifying themselves in face to face competition Get them used to facing off in competition Boxing Soccer Wrestling Volleyball Football Basketball Create a Champion’s Vision Provide opportunities for “callusing” Great performances emerge from the most difficult of circumstances Body gets used to being hungry, hot, dehydrated, tired (all within safety) while having to continue to perform German Silva, 2-time NYC Marathon Winner Prepares them to persever
