When comparing with PC-Based machine vision system, the smart camera has its advantages and disadvantages. Then after analyzing the digital signal processor, programmable logic devices, DSP/BIOS real-time operating system and the software development environment of CCS3.3, the plan of achieving a smart camera was proposed. Finally some real-time image processing algorithms were analyzed, some real-time images were processed according to hardware which was built up in the environment of experimental room, and some experimental results were gotten.The design of smart camera includes two parts: one is the design of hardware; another is the design of software. There are some key technologies about the design of hardware and software. They are as follows:1、In the process of building up hardware about smart camera, modular design was adopted. Firstly, on the basis of fully understanding the principle of work and the structural characteristics, the design of smart camera was dividing into several modules which were relatively independent and interrelate for each other. Secondly, on the basis of fully studying the chips of smart camera, the electrical connections were realized between the chips of every module and between the modules of smart camera.2、In the process of smart camera design, software were designed according to the needs of real-time images processing on the basis of knowing the practical application for achieving the purpose of image smoothing, medianfiltering, sharp gradients, edge detection under the software developmentenvironment of CCS3.3.
