Inanimate/Impersonal Subject vs. Animate/Personal Subject Check of Your Preview 1. Modesty becomes youth. 2. A decade of the traffic police job in the city center has hurt his hearing. Combining inanimate or impersonal subjects with animate verbs is prevalent in English, but the structure seldom occurs in Chinese languages except for personification. The subjects are usually time place, or nouns showing natural phenomenon or notions showing people’s physiological or psychological feelings, or nouns functioning as specific behaviors or actions. 1. time The early 1600’s saw the beginning of a great tide of emigration from Europe to North America. The 1970s brought a decline in eating out , but the 1980s , especially in homes where both parents were working , brought a big increase in the demand for many types of restaurants. 2. place The curiosity shop detained him for almost three hours. The very spot always reminded him of the accident which took away Sylvia’s life. (compare这个地方总使/提醒他) 3. natural phenomenon The morning sun greeted us as we came out on the deck. Dusk found the child crying in the street. 4. physical or psychological feelings Astonishment, apprehension, and even horror oppressed her. Astonishment deprived me of my power of speech. My conscience told me that I deserved no extraordinary politeness. My mind went numb when I saw the gun pointing against our car window as we pulled out of the garage. A spirited discussion springs up between a young girl who says that women have outgrown the jumping-on-a-chair-at-the-sight-of-a-mouse era and a major who says that they haven’t. Prac
