THE TEL-AVIV PRODUCER SERVICES SECTOR: CHANGE IN AN ERA OF GLOBALIZATION 8.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter examines advanced producer services and the processes of globalization in Tel-Aviv. More precisely, it focuses on the impact of two maj or sub-sectors of advanced producer services - advertising and accountancy - on the global processes and changes at play in the emerging node metropolis of Tel-Aviv. ‘Globalization’ is a general term used to refer to the social, political, environmental and, perhaps most significantly, economic phenomena that picked up speed around the globe at the end of the twentieth century. It denotes a situation in which decisions and activities taking place in one part of the world have rapid effect elsewhere by virtue of the diminishing influence of distance and borders.. By definition, producer services differ from other services in that they are not intended for final consumption, rather as intermediate components in the production of other goods or services. This may appear to be a simple definition, but attempting to classify different sectors based on this definition can be confusing. The ultimate result of such classification is a system of numerous sub-divisions and categories within the producer services sector. While most manufacturing services sectors are regarded as sectors that manufacture tangible products, others, such as software companies, manufacture actual products. Furthermore, some sectors, like consulting and data processing, use sophisticated work methods and instruments while others, like supply and maintenance, provide far more basic services.
