Statistics in Applied Linguistics Dr. Ma Guanghui Course Design Aims After the course, the course takers should have some fundamental knowledge of statistics; understand the meanings of the basic concepts of statistics; have a fairly good command of the statistical techniques introduced in this course; be able to use them to do statistical analyses with the help of computer and computer statistical software. Content of the Course (1) The textbook “Statistics in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics” has nine chapters. The 1st chapter introduces some basic concepts that will be used throughout the book. The 2nd chapter gives a brief introduction of SPSS, the statistical software “Statistical Package for Social Sciences”. The 3rd chapter deals with Descriptive Statistics. The 4th chapter shows how to make tables and graphs. Content of the Course (2) The 5th chapter discusses probability and distribution. The 6th chapter introduces methods of group comparison. The 7th chapter discusses correlation analysis. The 8th chapter deals with regression analysis The 9th chapter includes six exercises with the application of statistical methods and SPSS. Chapter One Introduction Section One: When Do We Need Statistics in Our Research? Section Two: What’s Statistics? Section Three: Descriptive vs. Inferential Statistics Section Four: Levels of Data Measurement Section Five: Sampling Section Six: Examples of the Application of Statistics in Applied Linguistics Statistics in Linguistic and Applied Linguistic Studies Statistics is usually used in empirical studies involving the use of numerical data.
