AbstractKen Kesey is an important famous writer of The Beat Generation in American literature. He is famous for his vivid description, profound social significance and strong sense of social criticism. His masterpiece One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is an outlasting example of American fictions in the 1960s. The novel reflected a prevailing social circumstance of counterculture movement in a transitional age from Beat Generation of 1950s to Hippies. In 1969, the novel was adapted a movie which win all five major Academy Awards. In this novel, a mental hospital as a background, Kesey describes the patients are controlled strictly and the struggle under great power. The novel reflects Kesey’s deep concern for human’s living dilemma and struggle in modern society.This thesis intends to analyze this novel from the perspective of Foucault’s Disciplinary Power. The hospital in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest just is like Foucault’s disciplinary society in which disciplinary power controls the whole hospital every time and every place. Based on the theory of Disciplinary Power, this thesis analyzes Nurse Ratched controls the patients from three aspects: the control of body, the control of mind and the control of natural response. All the patients are controlled so strictly that they don’t have any freedom at all. And at the same time this thesis analyzes under the disciplinary power of Nurse Ratched, McMurphy resists to struggle for freedom. He breaks the strict controls of Nurse Ratched and to struggle for the freedom of body, the freedom of mind and the freedom of natural response.This thesis includes five chapters. The first chapter introduces Ken Kesey and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, literature review, and the purpose of this thesis. The second chapter discusses Foucault’s theory of disciplinary power.
