AbstractFor outdoor public space environment, designers tend to focus on the plane layout design, functional partition, traffic streamline, landscape design, etc. Seldom did they pay attention to the design of the outdoor thermal environment and human body thermal comfort feeling. For an urban square space, especially in severe cold region, the outdoor thermal environment directly determines the time people spend in the square and the utilization of the square. Thermal environment including temperature, humidity, sunshine, wind and other factors, this paper mainly studies wind environment of urban square. The wind environment is one of the important factors of thermal environment, which people can feel intuitively and physically. Wind of different speeds gives people different feelings. If designers don`t make a good prediction on the wind environment of an urban square, there may be harsh wind environment occurring in some part of the square space.Firstly, this paper makes an outlook about the basic theory of wind environment in urban square, which including the wind environment of single building, the difference of the distance between adjacent buildings and surrounding modes. It also talks about people`s feelings and behavior to different wind environment and the three kind of standard for assessing outdoor wind environment. Then according the influence factors, this paper conducts some stimulating experiments about different kinds of building layouts to see the conditions of wind environment of each mode. At last, this paper tries to propose some strategies about optimizing the wind environment of rectangular urban square in severe cold region.Through software simulation about wind environment of rectangular urban square in severe cold region, we can get graphics of the results which can be shown to designers clearly and visually.
