AbstractInthisstudy,Al-(6,14,18)wt.%MnandAl-6wt.%Mn-2.5wt.%Bealloyhavebeenselectedforinvestigation.ThephasecompositionandmorphologyofrapidlysolidifiedAl-Mn-(Be)alloyhasbeencarefullystudiedtounveiltheintrinsiclawthatgovernsthegrowthbehavioroficosahedralquasicrystalundervariedsolidificationcondition.TheeffectofminoradditionofthirdelementontheenhancementofquasicrystalformationabilityhasbeeninvestigatedbyaddingsmallamountBeintotheAl-Mnalloy.ThemechanicalpropertiesofdirectionalsolidifiedAl-(8,10,12)wt.%Mn-2.5wt.Bealloywithvariedgrowthrateshavebeeninvestigated.ThisworkprovidesatheoreticalfoundationfortheactivecontrolofthephasecompositionandmorphologyoficosahedralquasicrystallinephaseinAl-Mn-(Be)alloyandestablishespracticalguidanceforthedevelopmentofin-situquasicrystal-particlereinforcedmetalmatrixcomposite.Themelt-spunbinaryAl-MnandternaryAl-6wt.%Mn-2.5wt.%Bealloyhasbeeninvestigatedtorevealthephasecompositionandmorphologyundervariedcoolingrate.IcosahedralquasicrystalexhibitsastrongtendencytoformunderahighcoolingratewithlargeMnconcentration.TheadditionofBesignificantlyenhancestheformationabilityoficosahedralquasicrystalinthebinaryAl-Mnalloy.Theicosahedralphaseispresentinthemelt-spunAl-6wt.%Mn-2.5wt.%Bealloyeventhecoolingrateissmall.The3-Dmorphologiesoficosahedralquasicrystalhavebeenobtainedbydeep-etchingtechnique.Theuniquecellularand5-foldpetal-likefeatureoficosahedralphaseindicatethatthisphaseistheprimaryphasehomogeneouslynucleatedfromtheliquid,andα-Alpropagatesinaplanarmannerafterthesolidificationoficosahedralphase.Themorphologyoficosahedralphasevariesgraduallyfromcellularsphereto5-petalflower-likedendrites,andultimatelygrowsintodevelopeddendrtites.IntherapidlysolidifiedAl-14wt.%Mnalloy,adefiniteorientationrelationshipbetweencrystallineAl57Mn12phaseandicosahedralphasehasbeendiscovered,namelyI3//[1-11]Al57Mn12.Asthecoolingrateincreases,thecrystallineAl57Mn12willtransformstoicosahedralquasicrystal,suchtransitioncanberelatedwiththeless-orderedatomicstacking.Thequasicrystal-
